EXCERPT FROM EVANGELISM TRAINING MANUAL

The following is an excerpt from our Evangelism Training Manual. It gives you an idea of what we teach in Churches when we train them up to evangelise their communitites.

Lesson 1: Objective 1

Define what we mean by the words "evangelism, evangelise, evangelist"

It is important that we define what we mean by these words. When we do evangelism, we are doing an important eternal work. For the sake of the souls we preach to, we must get it right. Many Christians are confused about what evangelism is, so they are not effective and produce false converts. In this section, we are going to define these terms from the bible. The words "evangelise" and "gospel" is being used to mean many different things today. Let us examine what these words mean from the Bible.

The words "evangelism" "evangelise" and "evangelist" all have their roots in the Greek word "euangelion" which literally means –the gospel or the good news about what God has done for mankind in Christ Jesus.

 1."Evangelism" = "Euangellion" The
     Gospel, The Good News

Euangellion NOUN, The gospel the Good News = Body of teaching we have about the person and work of Christ.

The Word "evangelism" comes from the Greek word "Euangellion", which is where we get our English word "gospel".

"For I am not ashamed of the GOSPEL ("euangellion") of Christ: Romans 1:16

"According to the glorious GOSPEL ("euangellion") of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. Timothy 1:11

When Paul used the word "the gospel" he is talking about specific teaching relating to the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Word Study "euangellion" The GOSPEL, good news.

 A.Strong’s Greek Dictionary

             Gospel = 2098. Euaggelion euaggelion yoo-ang-ghel'-ee-n; from the same as 2097; a good message, i.e. the gospel:--gospel.

 B.Thayer’s Greek Lexicon.

2)   good tidings

3)   the glad tidings of the kingdom of God soon to be set up, and subsequently also of Jesus the Messiah, the founder of this kingdom. After the death of Christ, the term comprises also the preaching of (concerning) Jesus Christ as having suffered death on the cross to procure eternal salvation for the men in the kingdom of God, but as restored to life and exalted to the right hand of God in heaven, thence to return in majesty to consummate the kingdom of God

2b) the glad tidings of salvation through Christ

2c) the proclamation of the grace of God manifest and pledged in Christ

2d) the gospel

Evangelism is about having a MESSAGE. The message we have is the "good news" about Christ Jesus dying upon the cross for the sins of the whole world.

** Evangelism is not just talking to people
    about God.

**Evangelism is not telling someone your testimony, how you got saved, although you may do this after you evangelise to them.

**Evangelism is about having the RIGHT Message, the Good News about salvation through Jesus Christ.

 2. Word Study:  "Evangelise" Verb
   "Euaggelizwo", Preach, Preached

"Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them." Acts 8:5

"To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand." 2 Corinthians 10:16

 A. Strong's Greek Dictionary

"Preached" is the Greek word: 2097. "Euaggelizwo euaggelizo" yoo-ang-ghel-id'-zo; from 2095 and 32; to announce good news ("evangelize") especially the gospel:--declare, bring (declare, show) glad (good) tidings, preach (the gospel).

B.Thayer's Greek Lexicon

 Preached/Preach: "euaggelzwo":

1)   to bring good news, to announce glad tidings

1b)in the NT used especially of the glad tidings of the coming kingdom of God, and of the salvation to be obtained in it through Christ, and of what relates to this salvation

1c) glad tidings are brought to one, one has glad tidings proclaimed to him

1d) to proclaim glad tidings

1d1) instruct (men) concerning the things that pertain to Christian salvation

The word evangelise comes from the Greek word "euaggelizwo." It is the Act of preaching the gospel; of telling men what Christ done for them on the Cross.

The Greek word "euaggelizwo" "evangelise" is translated in the King James as the English word "preached" or "preach."   As we can see from the above to evangelise is to preach the gospel.

 3. word Study "EVANGELISTS", "euaggelistes"

"And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the EVANGELIST, which was one of the seven; and abode with him. Acts 21:8

"And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists."  Ephesians 4:11

"But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry." 2 Timothy 4:5

 A. Strong's Greek Dictionary

 2099. Euaggelisthv "euaggelistes" yoo-ang-ghel-is-tace'; from 2097; a preacher of the gospel:--evangelist

 B. Thayer's Greek Lexicon

"Euaggelistes"

1)a bringer of good tidings, an evangelist

 2)   the name given to the NT heralds of salvation through Christ who are not apostles

The evangelist is one who is called by God to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. By divine calling, we mean that God has anointed them, or empowered them to preach the gospel.

Ephesians 4:11-12 says that God has placed five-fold ministry gifts in the Church to build, edify and build up the saints. The evangelist is part of this five-fold ministry gift:

"And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists…;
For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ…"

The Evangelist's call is two-fold:

 i.  He is called to the Church, to help the saints, build and exhort them and help mobilise them to preach the gospel to the Lost.

"For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:" Ephesians 4:12

ii.      He is called to the world, to preach Jesus to them.

"Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus." Acts 8:25

The evangelist is one who has a supernatural anointing from God to preach the gospel to sinners. They have a supernatural ability to preach the gospel and to see souls come to Christ.

You do not enter the ministry of an evangelist through your personal choice; it
is a divine calling.

Just because a person preaches the gospel, does not make them an Evangelist. We are all called to witness to the lost. Paul told Timothy to "do the work of an evangelist." 2 Timothy 4:5

To enter the office of an evangelist you have to be called and ordained of God. The proof of your calling will be your supernatural ability to preach, teach, and win souls to Christ on a consistent basis.
